While local vendors and service providers create amazing goods and experiences, somehow technology has yet to accelerate Lamu’s ability to conduct business.
In the western world we expect to be able to operate cash and even card free, engaging with our environment fluidly. Until now foreign visitors to Lamu were limited in their ability to financially engage with the community because most local vendors only accept cash (not convenient) or MPESA (a local virtual currency).
Explore Lamu a UK based company provides modern sales and booking facilities to local sellers which enables them to accept secure payments by all credit cards, apple pay or google pay, and all without the burden of technology.
Local vendors need only to request a free account on with our office in Lamu and our team will get them set up with all the tools they need to accept payments. Now vendors need only show their clients a unique code which, when scanned, will link their client to the vendors secure payment page on our platform. Clients can enter a reference for the payment and the agreed amount they wish to pay for their purchase, and then seamlessly complete payment.
We connect the global traveler to the local charm of Lamu without requiring our local community to be technically savvy, have a smart phone, credit card readers, electricity or any technical facility. Local vendors can simply show their payment link (QR Code) on the card we provide them and accept payment securely.
From a visitors perspective this means that your explorations of the island is no longer tied Hotel Providers, ATM withdrawals, or limited in any way. Visitors can now engage with vendors with only their phone in hand.
Where previously visitors would have needed to have a local Kenyan phone number to make payments in MPESA or to withdraw cash (often a half days worth of admin related travel to an ATM which does not work), now visitors can operate as if they were at home.

Explore Lamu Service Fees
We charge a small fee for each transaction so that we can provide small businesses with access to the technology required to process card payments, meaning they can make sales to more customers. It also helps us cover the cost of our platform and our entire support team.
The Explore Lamu Service fee is 15% of your transaction cost, plus VAT and taxes where applicable.
Half of all our profits go to carefully selected projects and charities which benefit our island community.
