Idd ul Fitr : This is the Muslim festival that marks the end of the fast during the Holy month of Ramadhan and is celebrated worldwide by all Muslims.
Here in Lamu town and Shela village, men and boys go to the mosque early in the morning around 7:00 am, wearing a special white or cream-colored robe called “Kanzu” for the special day prayers.
Women stay back at homes on that early morning, preparing special Swahili delicacies like Samosas, Cakes, Donuts, Tea, Milkshakes, Coffee, among other foods. When the men and boys come out of the Mosque, they visit each house to greet the elderly and enjoy the foods, symbolizing Islamic unity, brotherly bonding, and family togetherness.
On this day, kids are given small amounts of money from each house as a token for the special day. The children enjoy spending the money on toys and other items.
Sometimes dhow races are held on Idd as a fun activity, bringing enjoyment to everyone, and the winners are awarded money as a prize. At the Shela Football Field, there are two swings where kids gather in the afternoon for some fun.
This is a day filled with happiness, laughter, enjoyment, and a unique ambiance that brings joy to everyone.
